Hackathons have been around since the 1990’s. They bring together programmers, developers, user interface specialists, et cetera to ‘hack on’ a specific project to identify issues and create software solutions.
The Curaçao Tech Meetups is an inclusive event so everyone will be able to attend this hackathon, not just the tech geeks, because TOGETHER we build life using technology and everyone’s contribution is appreciated.
Public or semi-public service professionals – This includes Facility Managers, GIS Specialists, Public Utilities, Policy Makers, and everyone who deals with the public environment. Come with your industry experience and the problems you want to solve.
Developer and Designers – If you’re working with tech on a daily basis and want to hack into the code of the Curaçao 311 app this is your chance. During the event you can peak behind the app to see what can be improved and/or work on a collaborative project.
Students – The local students are our future professionals and policy makers. This hackathon will be a great way of getting ahead of the curve and bouncing your ideas off of likeminded, experienced individuals.
As well as anyone not part of the groups above and wants to contribute to improving our society.
Bring everything you need to work on your idea. This can include a laptop, your phone, pen and paper, and whatever you need to work and get your creative juices flowing. Also don’t forget to bring chargers for your devices and something warm to wear. Wifi will be available as well as snacks and drinks.
We want to create an environment that embraces new ideas and technology solutions for Curaçao. A place where technology designers and service professionals can come to help the industry, and a safe zone for R&D teams to geek out without having to worry about failure or affecting a company’s bottom line. We know it takes longer than a day to build great solutions, and we will be happy just to create a whitepaper, but this is ample time to form teams of good people and begin creating great solutions.
At the start of the event we will form (multi-disciplinary) teams based around the ideas people want to work with and the interests they have. You can come as a team or come alone and join or form a team. You could also form a team of one but you’ll see that a group of 3-5 will be able to get a lot more done in the short time we have.
This is a collaborative effort with the prize hopefully being the start of great collaborations, app offshoots, new projects, broadening/deepening the Curaçao 311 app, or something else entirely.
The team that develops the project is the owner of the project and IP. We do encourage sharing of ideas and code with others in the community or making code open source but it is not required to participate in the event.
The venue has graciously offered a special discount for participants on their lunch buffet so the people who stay for lunch can load up on their brains’ building blocks and the people who want to spend lunchtime with their family can do that.
During the event there will also be different kinds of snacks so you won’t go hungry.
We will work on our chosen projects in the morning, then break for lunch and do our presentations in the afternoon. So yes, you will have time to pick them up.
No, we do not offer any reimbursement for travel expenses.
We believe that most of the event should be accessible to everyone. So most sessions are free. Let’s say, around 90% of the event is free. Do contact us if you think you qualify for coming for free at one of our paid events.
